VENGEANCE is the first book in the Tainted Realm, a new fantasy series by much admired author Ian Irvine. It's a story of betrayal, murder and a girl's hunt for justice in a world where two peoples are divided and mistrust can only lead to war.

In Cython’s underground slave camps, only the timid and obedient survive – but Tali is neither of these. In Cython, having magic means the death penalty, and Tali’s gift is swelling out of her control.

Though no slave has ever escaped, Tali must, for she has sworn to bring her mother’s killers to justice. She meets Rix, a nobleman, and together they flee through a land at war, pursued by enemies and allies alike. Before they can solve the crime, and save the realm, they must learn to trust each other.

Rix’s subconscious is scarred by a sickening secret that he comes to realise links him to the killing. Tali is hunted by a faceless enemy that can only be beaten by magic. The one person who can teach her how to use her unique and unruly magic is the killer himself.

Vengeance The Tainted Realm Trilogy Book One eBook Ian Irvine

Vengeance is a complicated story. It is well written and bye and large the characters are ok defined. The venue for the story is imaginative although sometimes difficult to understand.
I was at a loss for the first third of the story as there was little background and and many of the 'magical' characters sprang from nowhere. Tali, the female protagonist, is the subject of various forms of beating, torture and punishment and it was not clear why. Despite the horrific treatment, she carries on and somehow recovers. Rix, a male protagonist, was mostly just stupid.
The story gradually coheres and the relationships clarify, but the land never came together for me, remaining too complicated and fuzzy. I found it difficult to identify with the characters, especially with unbelievable violence, unlikely fights and even a hand chopped off towards the end. The magical nature of some characters was never explained.
Not my kind of story but others may well enjoy it.

Vengeance The Tainted Realm Trilogy Book One eBook Ian Irvine Reviews

Growing up, Ian Irvine`s The Three Worlds Cycle introduced me to the world of fantasy, and to reading epic fantasy. His characters and worlds have a complexity and sense of realism like nothing I had read before; drawing me in, and engulfing my imagination. His novels have always been amongst my favourites.

Vengeance, book one in The Tainted Realm series is no different. His world, and his characters complex and unique. However, I am at odds with this book.

On one hand, I found it to be quite an enjoyable read, and as I had wanted to revisit Irvine's writing for some time now (though, via rereading The Three Worlds Cycle) it satisfied that want. His world is vivid, unique and complicated, the story wasn't boggled down by too many details, and was combined with both futuristic and medieval elements. On this alone, I would recommend reading Vengeance.

However, there were a few issues I had with it as well. For much of the first third the book, I found it rather hard to follow; frequently finding myself lost and confused due to a variety names and creatures with little to no known background story. Though, this cleared up as the novel progressed.

As well, while his characters were likeable enough -- though Rix got annoying at times -- and their interactions with each other were quite enjoyable, I wasn't able to completely get emotionally vested with any of them.

Vengeance was a bit of a mixed bag, while it certainly wasn't as good as it could have been, it was undoubtedly an enjoyable read; I found myself staying up until the early hours of the morning for a couple of nights to finish it, and promptly purchased the second, Rebellion upon completion.

Americans have really been missing out on this author for quite awhile due to his earlier and also excellent books missing from bookstores here in the states.

Ian is a master storyteller, with a great brain and a degree in one of the sciences to back him up. The result is vivid and unique landscapes with long and interesting epics placed carefully in the center of these imagined spaces.

This new series is a great read, and I am thrilled to have more to read from this author!
Again, this author is a bit dark at times, but his work never fails to entertain. I like this series a lot!
Seriously, I have absolutely loved reading Ian Irvine's, some reading again and some catching up. He manages to keep me reading..
I love a good epic fantasy read and these are some of mine...
This is not just fantasy, it has Sci for also. It took me a few chapters to understand the world, because of the Sci first elements. It turned out to be a good read and I plan on reading book 2 and 3.
The book starts with a lot of gruesome darkness, but the characters are actually warm and likeable. I really enjoyed reading this, and was drawn in by the story after about 20 pages. The main character is alike to some of Irvine's other women, but I usually like his women so that works for me. I really liked the relationships going on in the book, and I'm excited to see what happens in the next.

Keep at it Ian, you're one of my favorites.
