General Winfield Scott was probably the most popular General of the nineteenth century, partly because he was in the public eye the longest. Not only was he in almost every war since the War of 1812, he ran for president on the Whig ticket, and though he lost, he set yet another record as the tallest man ever to run for the office. By the time of the Civil War, Great Scott was seventy-four-years old, and too overweight and ill to mount his horse. Though he had to turn the reins over to George McClellan, "Old Fuss and Feathers" authored the Anaconda Plan that passed for the Union strategy. The Anaconda Plan showed a cartoon snake putting a stranglehold on supply lines on both Atlantic and Gulf coasts, and along the Mississippi. This autobiography takes the reader from his lineage through his early schooling to General in the Mexican War of 1848 into the Civil War (and many "Indian Wars" in between). It was in the Mexican War under Scott that almost every Civil War General North and South fought, and for that reason alone, this is essential reading for the Civil War buff.Product details
