There are degrees of loss. Most we can handle easily and quickly recover from. Others are devastating in their magnitude and can bring us to our very knees. In such circumstances, like Wailoa, we will run to and fro searching for help among our friends and associates. When we have done all we can do, we are likely to find our way to our knees again. This time, in humble appeal to a higher source. As surprising as the answer was for Wailoa, there is every reason for us all to be as hopeful of a miracle. Get up! Move forward and be hopeful the way will open, a Kukui nut will appear...

This is a great kids book and will make an excellent addition to either you own child's library or that of a teacher's library. My mother is an elementary school teacher and I often look for local children's books to add to her library. I purchased mine from the author in Hawaii and I liked it so much I'm buying another. As a standalone children's story book it is more than adequate and will please many children. But for teachers there are also free teaching plans available online to suplement the book material. The book, through illustration and story line, introduces some very iconic Hawaiian animals including: turtle, rooster, gecko, mongoose, crab, frog, snail, shrimp and various other aquatic life. Other plant life is also introduced including the kukui nut. The author teaching how helping others can be mutually beneficial through the Kukui nut and Wailoa the turtle. When Wailoa looses his home (his shell) he goes in search for it and Kukui helps him find a new one. I am sure you will enjoy this book as will your children. If you've been to Hawaii, live there, want to go there or teach your kids about helping others then this book is for you! I also purchased their newest book, Giovanni and Scampi the shrimp. Look out for it too!Product details

As a mom of three, I am always looking for books that can appeal to my children of varying ages. This book fit the bill. My kids (1,4,and 7) were engaged as they listened to the tale of a Hawaiian turtle who has lost his shell. Although the story is great, the illustrations are what really makes this book shine. With vibrant colors, illustrator Jim Atherton really makes the characters in this book appeal to kids (and adults as well, as I found myself lingering over the pages to enjoy the artwork). My kids have never been to Hawaii, so we were excited to learn about the island in such a fun way. Each page is chock full of things to look at, with a host of colorful critters and flora that really bring Hawaii to life. My kids learned a lot about Hawaii from this book that is sure to be a family favorite.
