2017 Reprint of 1933 Edition.  Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition software.  Pirandello began writing it in 1909. In an autobiographical letter, published in 1924, the author refers to this work as the "...bitterest of all, profoundly humoristic, about the decomposition of life….”  Vitangelo, the protagonist, discovers by way of a completely irrelevant question that his wife poses to him that everyone he knows, and everyone he has ever met, has constructed a Vitangelo persona in their own imagination and that none of these personas corresponds to the image of Vitangelo that he himself has constructed and believes himself to be.  The reader is immediately immersed in a cruel game of confusing projections, mirroring the reality of social existence itself, which imperiously dictate their rules.  As a result, the first, ironic "awareness" of Vitangelo consists in the knowledge of that which he definitely is not; the preliminary operation must therefore consist in the spiteful destruction of all of these fictitious masks.

One None and a Hundred Thousand Luigi Pirandello Samuel Putnam Books

The masterpiece that is Luigi Pirandello's "One, None, and a Hundred Thousand" is at first glance the story of a man viewed by his friends and family to have gone mad, as he systematically does his best to destroy each and every one of his identifiable personas.

The genius of this book is the way it brings us inside the mind of it's main character, an Italian man named Vitangelo, who becomes obsessed with the notion that his version(s) and understanding of himself are not at all the same as the personas that others believe him to be--nor are they likely who he thinks them to be. In any gathering of two people A and B, for example, we will at minimum have four definitive personas present: the person A believes A to be, the person A believes B to be, the person B believes A to be, and the person B believes B to be. In truth, there are far more likely a great deal more personas present even than that, as this fascinating novel vividly describes.

One None and a Hundred Thousand Luigi Pirandello Samuel Putnam Books Reviews

great book
It's always nice to read a real book!! and I like Pirandello. It's refreshing and his subject is way before all the new social discoveries. It was an easy transaction and a fast delivery. Thank you
I recommended it to all of my friends.
Great story. The author's style perfectly expresses the madness of the main character
Every sentence in this book is over exaggerated. I was really looking forward to reading it but 2 chapters in I find myself getting annoyed at how much everything drags on and not even paying attention to the story itself.
A slow read, but very thought-provoking, would recommend for all those people searching for the real version of themself.
Physically, the book is very high quality. Make sure you make note of the product description "Due to its age, it may contain imperfections such as marks, notations, marginalia and flawed pages." It has some flaws but it does not detract from the quality of the book.
