This is the story of Jai and Kaahi and their friends. I found it interesting in that it gives you an idea of life in India and the perspective of someone who moves to the U.S. Life is quite different in these two countries. Unfortunately, the story didn’t grab me. I didn’t feel very invested in Jai and Kaahi. Jai seemed a bit self-centered, and I wondered why highly educated Kaahi settled into being a bored housewife in the U.S. Also, there were a few very long descriptions of the game of cricket which is apparently very popular in India but not important to the story. I appreciate the idea of the story and the descriptions of life in India, but it wasn’t a page turner.

India Was One An Indian 9780615916194 Books Reviews

Beautiful and loving tribute to India and the varied cultural population living there. This is a book about a group of friends. It's the story of their lives from the time they attend college. Each one comes from a different cultural group, but they are united with their love of food and cricket, the national sport. It has a folksy, 1950, naiveté quality to the writing. The characters are innocent, young, eager to learn about new lifestyles, yet proud and respectful of their own. When India is rent by a civil war, each is affected in some way, much like our own civil war. Neighbors fight neighbors, and what was once a peaceful and loving community, now becomes fragmented, their differences dividing rather than unifying them. While the writing was clearly translated from another language, and small explanations interrupted the flow of the narrative, I didn't mind. It read a bit like a documentary to me. I enjoyed this book, and learned that while India may have been divided geographically, it's soul remained whole. Like it was stated in the book, "You can take the Indian out of India, but you can't take the India out of the Indian."
An unusual novel of two distinct parts. Part one is written in the style of travelogue by a wealthy Indian couple who have immigrated to the USA; but their adventures are inhibited by their being wealthy enough to overcome all obstacles and setbacks encountered in what could have been a humorous clash of cultures. Instead, for the most part we are treated to detailed descriptions of exotic menu choices in an Indian restaurant.
Part two is the continuance of the same couple's experiences during a sudden unforeseen, gentlemanly and bloodless partition of the Indian sub-continent, which brings meaning to the book's title. The resolution of this tale is accomplished by an implausible suspension of disbelief.
The plot is naive, frustrating even, potentially it could have been so much more.
"'I didn't call you BLOODY. I called you BUDDY, a friend. But if you don't take my friend's advice, he will make you bloody....that I can promise you'" (p. 9)

"'It says on the card "RESIDENT ALIEN." ALIEN? Made me feel so strange and unwelcome here, like I was from some other planet. ....I felt so bad that day, but not as bad as when I became a US citizen'" (Page 214).

"Actually, it was a sign that had said 'Welcome to India,' but someone had altered it, and put a caret between 'to' and 'India' and added
'South' above it in a hurry. IT LOOKED UGLY" (p. 270).

INDIA WAS ONE is one "North and South" tale that needed to be told, and now needs to be read and shared.
This was a truly excellent book and a perfect example why one should read. The book not only expanded my knowledge of India but also made me want to know even more. India Was One isn't just an informational book but a love story of Jai and Kaahi.

This took me a bit longer than a usual read, not because I didn't enjoy the book but rather because I had to stop and look up information on something I had read. Read this if you are want a better understanding of a culture. I probably wouldn't recommend for those who speak English and don't enjoy reading words in another language or become frustrated with translating while reading.
I enjoyed this story about 2 young Indians meeting, falling in love, and the troubles they encountered in their lives. This story was very well written. I really liked the way he explained the culture as only someone born to it could. I also liked the way he showed the history of India that is not really shown to us in the US. The characters were all likeable and your really cared about them. I did get very tired of some parts of the story. Like when the group of friends were all watching and discussing a cricket match. I do not care for sports and the scene went on page after page after page. But that is just me. I was happy with the ending knowing that a civil war tears up many lives. I would certainly recommend this story to anyone that would like to learn more about India.
